The British Ambassador in Battipaglia for the 80th Anniversary of Operation Avalanche

Our effort is to disseminate and promote, especially on an international level, the importance of the sacrifices made by the Province of Salerno during World War II, particularly during the harrowing days of Operation Avalanche.

The desired increase in international attention has materialized this year. Past correspondence with the embassies of the countries involved and the credibility gained from initiatives in recent years, sponsored by the Ministry and the National Fund, have allowed us to organize an event this year with the presence of the British Embassy in Rome—Ambassador Sir Edward Llewellyn, the military attaché, and the communications officer—the Australian Embassy’s military attaché in Madrid, Rachel Jones, the military chaplain of NATO Joint Force Command in Naples, and from Milan, General Jez Bennet, Deputy Commander of NATO in Italy. Joining them were over 25 NATO officers, including descendants of veterans such as Dr. Michel Somerville, who shared his testimony at the conference.
