A new Erasmus+ for the Alfonso Gatto institute in collaboration with Mubat

The Alfonso Gatto Comprehensive Institute of Battipaglia was one of the first realities in the area that committed itself to the enhancement of the historical heritage linked to the events of 1943: the Avalanche Operation.

For this reason, the manager Dr. Cristina Sorgente immediately agreed to the idea of presenting a proposal within the Erasmus + program of the European Union.

The proposal called Seas of Peace was positively evaluated by the commission and financed, in the next two years the boys and girls of the Cat will meet with the Greek peers of the School of Palekastro, led by Professor Stefania Alfinito and supported by our association.

The project aims to stimulate the study of the war events of the past to promote the discussion on Peace among children. The proposal, developed last year, focuses on a theme that recent events in Ukraine have unfortunately made even more relevant. The deepening of history will become food for thought on the current tensions in the Mediterranean as a multi-border area between Europe, Asia and Africa and on the need for a debate that focuses on mutual understanding and inclusion.

This is a very important opportunity because it will allow the students of Battipaglia to get to know a foreign reality close to us but it will also give us the opportunity to spread knowledge about Avalanche Day in a European context. Seas of Peace is the second project that the Gatto Institute presents on the theme of the Avalanche operation and places the Institute itself, with Mubat, among the main animators of cultural promotion on the events of the Second World War on our Territory.

The project aims to increase students’ personal technological and cultural skills, thanks to the use of cloud services and specialized platforms, and aims to increase their awareness and critical analysis skills:

  • using digital tools in intensive mode
  • identifying as a scenario the study of the Second World War which saw the nations involved in the project on opposite fronts (1941 invasion of Crete by Germans and Italians, 1943 the allies landed in Salerno, Crete became a place of detention for Italians soldiers, 1945 Crete was freed by the allies)
  • by stimulating the safeguarding of historical memory: we will encourage students to involve their families to bring out the hidden heritage and sensitize them to the preservation of oral memory.
